Titleimage: Walter Benjamin Kolleg

The Walter Benjamin Kolleg brings together research activities of the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Bern. In inter- and transdisciplinary projects, doctoral students, junior fellows and other young researchers examine key questions of the Humanities, Social and Cultural Sciences. In all of this, the Kolleg’s role is to provide the framework for creative solutions when approaching problems which concern all of us.

Further information about the Kolleg can be gathered from the About us website.

Walter Benjamin died at Portbou in 1940. Danni Karavan’s memorial “Passagen” [Passages] takes up a figure of thought not only central to Benjamin’s work, but also to the work done at the Walter Benjamin Kolleg.

New research platform "Silicon Mountains"

Since August 2019, the Faculty of Humanities supports a new research platform: Silicon Mountains is a research project that originated at the Institute of Social Anthropology. It explores the question of how the digital age affects the Swiss Alps and alters the Alpine space in political, economic and cultural terms.

In collaboration with researchers at the Institute of History, the Institute of Geography, the Center for Environment and Development (CDE) and the Wallis University of Applied Sciences, Silicon Mountains aims to encourage scientific exchange and networking among researchers, as well as to support interested students in generating a variety of interdisciplinary research.

Further information can be found soon on the project's website.
